In Nederland is er een opkomst met nieuwe jonge country artiesten, waaronder Koen Vael.

Hans; Koen Western Experience! Eerste keer?
Koen; Tweede keer. Vorige keer in de “Songwriters Café”. En nu mocht ik op de main stage staan, Bob`s Stage. En dat was echt te gek.
Hans; Even een klassieke vraag Koen, “wie is Koen Vael”?
Koen; Koen Vael is een jongen, een zoon, een country artiest, een broer uit het plaatsje Steenbergen! Op jonge leeftijd ( 3 à 4 jaar) heb ik “The Eagles” leren kennen. Verkocht geraakt door de muziek. En daar in verder gegaan. Dat is eigenlijk mijn verhaal.
Hans; Heb je destijds les gehad in de muziek?
Koen; Ik ben begonnen als drummer. Daar heb ik ook les in gehad. Maar mijn oom speelde gitaar, en dat vond ik super gaaf. En daarom ben ik ook gitaar gaan spelen. En daarnaast ben ik erbij gaan zingen. En eigenlijk is dat heel mijn leven mijn bezigheid geweest.
Hans; Dat je gitaar kan spelen hebben we net wel gezien.
Koen; Dank je!
Hans; Het was een spetterende optreden. Het jonge publiek kennen je allemaal.
Koen; Het was super leuk. Hans; mensen stonden allemaal mee te zingen. Koen; ja fantastisch.
Hans; Ik heb er van genoten.
Koen; Dank je.
Hans; Je debuutsingle “Hate Me”. Wel een aparte titel hè?
Koen; De titel is apart, maar als je naar de tekst luistert dan is het minder apart. Het is niet in de zin bedoeld van “haat me”. Het is eigenlijk een sarcastische titel.
Hans; Waar haal je dan de teksten vandaan? Waardoor laat je jezelf inspireren?
Koen; Eigenlijk door mijn privé leven. De gene waar ik van hou, die ging niet door zo`n fijne tijd heen. En als ik naar mijzelf kijk, dan misschien wat van de oude stempel, met wat hardere hand. Niet op de slechte manier bedoeld. Maar als ik iemand ergens mee uit probeer te helpen, dan gaat dat vaak wat grover dan normaal. En dan vertel ik heel eerlijk waar het op staat. Ik ga je eruit helpen hoe dan ook. Je mag me ervoor “haten”. Dat is eigenlijk de insteek.
Hans; Hoe heeft “Holland's Got Talent” je geholpen om je op een ander niveau te zetten?
Koen; Holland's Got Talent heeft mij geholpen, door de ervaring te bieden. Televisie is een hele andere wereld dan festivals en kroegjes waar ik ook speel. Televisie is een heel ander verhaal. Die ervaring had ik echt nodig. Mee doen in een grote productie. Zodat je ziet hoe dat er aan toe gaat. En het is natuurlijk een prachtig platform voor hopelijk voor de country fans, dat die muziek ook vertoond word op televisie. Zeker in deze tijd waarin ik het idee heb dat het steeds populairder aan het worden is.
Hans; Nauw dat weet ik wel zeker. Vooral onder de jongeren, spreekt het heel erg aan.
Koen; Juist
Hans; En als er dan ook nog jonge muzikanten op het podium staan, en niet allemaal van die oude…hmm ( 😅 😅)
Koen; ja dat is wat ik bedoel.
Hans; Jongere mensen kijken graag naar jongere artiesten. En daar is ook niks fouts mee natuurlijk. En dat is alleen maar goed. En dat geld natuurlijk ook voor de songwriters. Doe je relmatig songs schrijven?
Koen; Ja bijna dagelijks
Hans; Doe je dat voor jezelf? Of ook voor andere?
Koen; Momenteel nog veel voor mijzelf. Maar hier en daar heb ik wel schrijf sessies met andere artiesten. En wat er dan met het liedje gebeurt, dat zien we dan wel.
Hans; Ik las dat je ook in de Ziggo Dome hebt gestaan. Hoe ben je daar terecht gekomen?
Koen; Ik werd getipt door mijn oude overbuur jongen. We komen wel uit een klein dorpje, maar iedereen bijna iedereen maakt bij ons muziek. En hij speelde in de band van de “man man man podcast”. Met o.a. Mien Verschuuren, voor Qmusic. En die hebben een eigen Ziggo Dome show gedaan. Als afsluiting van hun Podcast. En hij tipte mij van, jongen kom auditie doen. Want dan kan je misschien in de Ziggo Dome komen spelen. Ik ben met onze pedalsteel player naar Utrecht gegaan. En hebben we in de kroeg van de Podcast eigenaar auditie gedaan. En zo mochten we mee spelen in de Ziggo Dome show. Maar liefst anderhalve minuut, maar het was de beste anderhalve minuut in mijn leven.
Hans; Het is toch weer naams vermelding!
Koen; jazeker, niet alleen voor mijzelf maar ook voor de country scene!
Dat deze muziek ook vertegenwoordigd kan worden op deze plekken.
Hans; Je bent aangesloten bij Greenhouse Talent. Is dat voor jouw een boekings bureau of helpen ze jouw ook verder?
Koen; Greenhouse doen de boekingen. Ik denk dat Greenhouse Talent het meest country boekings kantoor wat er is. Zei doen de “vetste” country evenementen. En ik voel me heel vereerd dat ik bij hun ook getekend mag zijn.
Hans; De band die je vandaag bij had, is dat een vaste samenstelling? Of is het een gelegenheids band?
Koen; Het is een vaste samenstelling, op de lead gitarist na. Rogier Brink valt bij ons in, waar nodig. En zo wisselen we af tussen meerdere gitaristen. Maar de rest van de bandleden zitten vast in de band.
Hans; Die basgitarist die kan er ook wel wat van zag en hoorde ik.
Koen; ja fantastisch hè het zijn goede muzikanten.
Hans; Je song "Good as Gone" is 26-09-2025 uitgebracht. Hoe loopt dat?
Koen; Ja gaat goed. Inmiddels 50.000 streams gehaald. Maar het gaat goed. Het word steeds meer herkent door de mensen. Het komt in Amerika en Canada terecht. Maar ook in Brazilië en Mexico, België, Nederland, Duitsland. Ja het gaat heel goed.
Hans; Wat zijn jouw ambities voor de toekomst?
Koen; Zo groot mogelijk worden. Ik wil in de toekomst naar Nashville verhuizen, voor de rest an mijn leven. En kom nooit meer terug. En daar wil ik aan mijn verdere muziek carrière gaan werken. En het hoogst haalbare wat er te halen valt. En kijken of dat lukt? “Aim for the moon and reach the stars” zeg ik altijd.

Hans; Koen Western Experience! First time?
Second time. Last time at the "Songwriters Café." And now I got to perform on the main stage, Bob's Stage. Koen; And that was absolutely amazing.
Hans; A classic question Koen, “who is Koen Vael”?
Koen; Koen Vael is a boy, a son, a country artist, a brother from the town of Steenbergen! I was introduced to "The Eagles" at a young age (3 or 4). I was captivated by the music. And I continued with it. That's basically my story.
Hans; Did you have music lessons at the time?
Koen; I started out as a drummer. I even took lessons. But my uncle played guitar, and I thought that was really cool. So I started playing guitar too. And I also started singing. And that's actually been my whole life.
Hans; We've seen that you can play the guitar.
Koen; Thank you!
Hans; It was a fantastic performance. The young audience all knew you.
Koen; It was super fun.
Hans; people were all singing along.
Koen; yes fantastic.
Hans; I enjoyed it.
Koen, thank you.
Hans; Your debut single, "Hate Me." Quite a unique title?
Koen; The title is odd, but when you listen to the lyrics, it's less odd. It's not meant in the sense of "hate me." It's actually a sarcastic title.
Hans; Where do you get your lyrics from? What inspires you?
Koen; Actually, it's because of my personal life. The one I love wasn't having such a good time. And if I look at myself, maybe a bit more old-fashioned, with a somewhat harsher hand. Not in a bad way. But when I try to help someone out of something, it often goes a bit rougher than usual. And then I tell you exactly what's going on. I'm going to help you out no matter what. You can "hate" me for it. That's actually the point.
Hans; How did “Holland's Got Talent” help you reach another level?
Koen; Holland's Got Talent helped me by offering the experience. Television is a completely different world than the festivals and bars where I also perform. Television is a completely different story. I really needed that experience. Participating in a major production. So you see what it's like. And of course, it's a wonderful platform, hopefully for country music fans, to have that music shown on television. Especially now, when I feel like it's becoming increasingly popular.
Hans; Well, I know that for sure. It's especially appealing to young people. Koen: Exactly.
Hans; And if there are also young musicians on stage, and not all of those old ones …hmm ( 😅 😅)
Koen; yeah that's what i mean.
Hans; Younger people enjoy watching younger artists. And there's nothing wrong with that, of course. And that's only a good thing. And that goes for the songwriters too, of course. Do you write songs relatively?
Koen; Yes almost daily
Hans; Are you doing this for yourself? Or for others as well?
Koen; I'm still mostly working on my own at the moment. But I do have writing sessions with other artists here and there. And we'll see what happens with the song then.
Hans; I read that you also performed at the Ziggo Dome. How did you end up there?
Koen; My old neighbor across the street gave me a tip. We might be from a small village, but almost everyone here makes music. He played in the band for the "man man man podcast," featuring Mien Verschuuren, among others, for Qmusic. They even had their own Ziggo Dome show, as the closing act of their podcast. He told me, "Son, come audition. You might be able to play at the Ziggo Dome." I went to Utrecht with our pedal steel player, and we auditioned at the podcast owner's pub. That's how we got to play on the Ziggo Dome show. It was only for a minute and a half, but it was the best minute and a half of my life.
Hans; It's name calling again!
Koen; Yes, definitely, not just for myself but also for the country scene!
That this music can also be represented in these places.
Hans; You're affiliated with Greenhouse Talent. Is that just a booking agency for you, or do they also help you out?
Koen; Greenhouse handles the bookings. I think Greenhouse Talent is the most country-focused booking agency out there. They do the coolest country events. And I feel very honored to be signed with them as well.
Hans; The band you were with today, is it a permanent lineup? Or is it an occasional band?
Koen; It's a permanent lineup, except for the lead guitarist. Rogier Brink fills in when needed. And so we alternate between several guitarists. But the rest of the band members are permanent.
Hans; I heard that bass guitarist can play really well too?
Koen; yes fantastic huh, they are good musicians.
Hans; Your song "Good as Gone" was released on September 26, 2025. How's that going?
Koen; Yes, it's going well. It's already reached 50,000 streams. But it's going well. It's becoming more and more recognized by people. It's reaching America and Canada, but also Brazil and Mexico, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. Yes, it's going very well.
Hans; What are your ambitions for the future?
Koen; To become as big as possible. I want to move to Nashville in the future, for the rest of my life. And never come back. That's where I want to work on my music career. And achieve the highest possible. And see if I succeed? "Aim for the moon and reach the stars," I always say.
