Hans; We zijn bij de Western Experience 2026 en wie komen we tegen “Dick Bolle en Shirley Ann” van de band "The Country Wings"
Dick; Jazeker
Hans; Het is toch wel heel lang geleden dat wij met jullie gesproken hebben. Hoe gaat het met “The Country Wings”?
Dick; Ja we zijn lekker bezig. Wat ik al eerder vertelde, we zijn tijdelijk in een dipje geraakt, i.v.m. wisselingen in de band. En ja dan moet je weer nieuwe zoeken. En ja onze lat licht heel erg hoog, waardoor goede muzikanten niet voor het oprapen liggen. Maar we hebben een hele goede gitarist gevonden, en we zijn weer “back in business”
Hans; Vandaag op de Western Experience. Helaas heb ik jullie net gemist, maar welke songs brengen jullie tegenwoordig zoal?
Shirley Ann; Toch wel de modernere country. Nummers van o.a. “Lainey Wilson”, in die hoek zitten we een beetje!
Hans; Een beetje de up-tempo nummers als ik dat zo mag begrijpen?
Shirley Ann; Zeker! We moeten natuurlijk wel een feestje maken hè?
Hans; Ik vernam van jullie agenda dat jullie ook veel in het buitenland vertoeven toch?
Dick; Klopt wij focussen ons vooral op Duitsland. We hebben daar een aantal mooie festivals staan. Waar we gevraagd zijn. We hebben ons eigen festival wat we organiseren met onze Duitse partner “Harz Goes Country”. En natuurlijk spelen we daar. We hebben een heel pittoresk dorpje gevonden in België Hotton. Ook daar staan we met de band.
Dus ja, we reizen wat af.
Hans; Ja in het buiteland opdeden is ook heel erg mooi om te doen. Maarja we zagen jou in jouw, hoe moet ik het zeggen. In een “Kilt
“ rond lopen. En wij vroegen ons af is dat nu Dick Bolle. Maar hij was het echt. Maar waarom is dat eigenlijk Dick?
Dick; Het komt eigenlijk, dat wij Shirley en ik. Wij zijn “schotofielen” om zo maar te zeggen. Wij zijn helemaal verpand aan Schotland. We zijn daar ook getrouwd. En we voelen daar een bepaalde binding mee. En op een bepaald moment had ik zoiets van, want toen we gingen trouwen had ik mijn officiële kilt aan.
Hans; O, je hebt er dus meer?
Dick; Jazeker. Ik heb dus een echte officiële kilt. En om de liefhebbers om te weten en “Ja dat is zonder onderbroek” 😂 😂 😂 😂
Shirley Ann; Vandaag niet.
Hans; Ja okay word anders zo`n raar plaatje als je onder aan het podium aan het fotograferen bent. 😂 😂 😂 😂
Dick; Daarom heb ik op het podium mijn “werk kilt” aan. En bij die kilt heb ik natuurlijk wel een onderbroek aan. Maar waarom? Dat komt omdat wij een nummer doen van een Schotse zanger. En die zanger heeft een country nummer geschreven. En in dat nummer zit een “doedelzak” in. En laat ik nu heel toevallig doedelzak bespelen. Dus dat nummer hebben wij ingeleerd.
Hans; Hoe heet dat nummer?
Dick; Whiskey Roll van Cammy Barnes
Hans; Maar heb je speciaal voor dat nummer doedelzak leren spelen? Of hoe is dat ontstaan?
Dick; Eigenlijk vanuit Schotland. Toen wij gingen trouwen hadden wij een doedelzak speler. Wij stappen uit onze trouwauto en dan hoor je die klanken, en dat maakt iets bij je los. Niet iedereen heeft dat. Maar bij ons wel. En ik dacht, ik wil heel graag dat instrument gaan bespelen”.
Hans; Maar waar leer je een doedelzak bespelen in Nederland?
Dick; Heel toevallig leer je dat bij ons in Zoetermeer!
Hans; Echt waar?
Dick; Ja. Ik dacht ook. Er is niemand die hier in Nederland doedelzak les geeft. Het zit zo! De muziek vereniging die wij in Zoetermeer hebben, waar je allerlei lessen kan volgen. En daar was een leraar doe doedelzak les geeft. Dus ik hoef maar een kwartiertje te rijden, en ik ben bij mijn doedelzak les.
Hans; Dat is toch heel toevallig. Maar hoe lang heb je er nu over gedaan om er wat muziek noten eruit te krijgen?
Dick; Ik ben ongeveer een jaar bezig geweest op een oefen fluit. Dus dan is die doedelzak nog helemaal niet aan de orde.
En daarna ben ik een jaartje bezig geweest om de doedelzak in bedwang te kunnen houden. Weten hoe hard je moet knijpen, hoe hard je moet blazen. Wanneer gaan die drones beginnen, en wanneer gaan die fluiten aan de gang. Als het te hard gaat dan klinkt het vals, als je te zacht gaat dan is het vals. Dus het vraagt enige “skills”. Dus totaal ben ik er twee jaar mee bezig geweest.
Hans; Twee jaar. En je brengt nu één met een doedelzak. Wat brengt de toekomst?
Dick; Ik denk dat, dat wel meer zal worden. Mijn grootste angst was van. Wat vind de band ervan? Maar ze hebben er goed op gereageerd en dan vind ik het ook leuk om te doen. Het word niet zo dat wij een “doedelzak” band worden, dat willen wij niet. Maar het mag wel wat meer zijn.
Hans; En hoe reageert het publiek erop?
Dick; Verrassend
Hans; Ja dat dacht ik wel!
Dick; De doedelzak is nu niet echt een instrument wat heel bekend is. Men kent het wel, maar niet dat je het tegen zou kunnen komen op een Western Experience. Dus als je dan met een doedelzak op het podium staat, dan geeft dat nogal wat bekijks. En dan heb je ook nog de factor dat ik een “kilt” draag. En ja dan wil iedereen mooie foto`s maken natuurlijk. Als je bassist bent is er bijna niemand die een foto maakt van je. Dus daar moest ik wat aan doen.
Hans; Weet je hoe dat komt. Dat komt omdat bassisten meestal ergens achteraan gaan staan! Wat zijn de toekomst plannen van de “Wings”?
Shirley Ann; De toekomst plannen. We zijn weer druk aan het schrijven. Dus in de toekomst zal er wel weer een nieuwe cd uitkomen. We hebben net weer een nummer uitgebracht, althans die gaan we uitbrengen.
Hans; Hoe heet dat nummer?
Shirley Ann; Wilder Days. Het is niet door ons geschreven. Maar het is van “Morgan Wade“. Maar we gaan het wel op onze manier uitbrengen. En we gaan weer mooie optredens doen.

Today at the Western Experience 2026, we spoke with the founders of Country Wings, Dick Bolle and Shirley Ann..
Hans; We're at the Western Experience 2026 and who do we run into? “Dick Bolle and Shirley Ann” from the band "The Country Wings"
Dick; Yes indeed
Hans; It's been a long time since we last spoke with you. How are things going with "The Country Wings"?
Dick; Yes, we're doing great. As I mentioned before, we've temporarily hit a slump due to band changes. And then you have to find new ones. And yes, we set our standards very high, so good musicians aren't easy to come by. But we found a really good guitarist, and we're back in business.
Hans; Today at the Western Experience. I missed you, unfortunately, but what kind of songs are you performing these days?
Shirley Ann; Definitely modern country. Songs by artists like "Lainey Wilson"—we're kind of in that category!
Hans; A bit of up-tempo numbers, if I may understand that?Shirley Ann; Sure! We have to have a party, right?
Hans; I heard from your diary that you also spend a lot of time abroad, right?
Dick; That's right, we're focusing mainly on Germany. We have some great festivals there, where we've been asked. We have our own festival, which we organize with our German partner, "Harz Goes Country." And of course, we're playing there. We've found a very picturesque village in Belgium, Hotton. We'll be there with the band as well.
So yes, we're traveling quite a bit.
Hans; Yes, gaining experience abroad is also a wonderful thing. But then again, we saw you walking around in your, how should I put it? A "kilt." And we wondered, was that Dirk Bolle? But it really was him. But why is that Dick, anyway?
Dick; It's actually that we, Shirley and I, are "Scotofielen," so to speak. We're completely devoted to Scotland. We even got married there. And we feel a certain connection to it. And at one point, I thought, because when we got married, I was wearing my official kilt.
Hans; OH, so you have more?
Dick; Yes, absolutely. So I have a real, official kilt. And just so you know, "Yes, that's without underwear."😂 😂 😂 😂
Shirley Ann; Not today. Hans: Yeah, okay, it would be a weird picture if you were taking photos from the bottom of the stage. 😂 😂 😂 😂
Dick; That's why I'm wearing my "work kilt" on stage. And of course, I'm wearing underwear with that kilt. But why? It's because we're doing a song by a Scottish singer. And that singer wrote a country song. And that song has "bagpipes" in it. And as luck would have it, I play the bagpipes. So we learned that song.
Hans; What's the name of that song?
Dick; Whiskey Roll by Cammy Barnes
Hans; But did you learn to play the bagpipes specifically for that song? Or how did that come about?
Dick; Actually, from Scotland. When we got married, we had a bagpiper. We'd get out of our wedding car and hear those sounds, and it really resonated with you. Not everyone has that. But we do. And I thought, I really want to play that instrument.
Hans; But where do you learn to play the bagpipes in the Netherlands?
Dick; Coincidentally, you will learn this here in Zoetermeer!
Hans; Really and truly?
Dick; Yes. I thought so too. There's no one here in the Netherlands who teaches bagpipes. It's like this! We have a music club in Zoetermeer, where you can take all kinds of lessons. And there was a teacher who teaches bagpipes. So I only have to drive fifteen minutes, and I'm at my bagpipe lesson.
Hans; That's quite a coincidence. But how long did it take you to get some musical notes out of it?
Dick; I've been working on a practice flute for about a year. So bagpipes aren't even on the agenda yet.
And then I spent a year mastering the bagpipes. Knowing how hard to squeeze, how hard to blow. When do the drones start, and when do the whistles start? If you play too loud, it sounds off-key; if you play too softly, it's off-key. So it requires some skill. In total, I spent two years on it.
Hans; Two years. And now you're performing one with bagpipes. What does the future hold?
Dick; I think it will become more. My biggest fear was, "What will the band think?" But they've responded well, and I enjoy doing it. We won't become a "bagpipe" band; we don't want that. But it could be a bit more.
Hans; And how does the public react to it?
Dick; Surprising
Hans; Yeah, I thought so!
Dick; The bagpipe isn't exactly a well-known instrument. People know them, but you wouldn't expect to encounter them at a Western Experience. So, being on stage with a bagpipe attracts quite a bit of attention. And then there's the added bonus of me wearing a kilt. And of course, everyone wants to take great pictures. If you're a bassist, almost no one takes a picture of you. So I had to address that.
Hans; You know why? It's because bassists usually end up at the back! What are the future plans for the "Wings"?
Shirley Ann; Planning the future. We're busy writing again. So a new CD will probably be released in the future. We just released another song, or at least we're going to release it.
Hans: What's the name of that song?
Shirley Ann; Wilder Days. It's not written by us. It's by Morgan Wade. We're going to release it our way, though. And we're going to do some great shows again.
