We zijn bij de Western Experience en we komen Mark Blomsteel tegen. De in Rotterdam opgegroeide Mark verliet zijn roots om zijn passie voor muziek verder te ontwikkelen in het mekka van country muziek Nashville. Op achttien jarige leeftijd schreef hij al zijn eerste song “Leaving it all behind”,
Welke een hit werd op Myspace. Door deze hit kreeg Mark een telefoontje uit Nashville en vroegen of hij naar hun studio wilde komen. Vandaag gaan wij met hem in gesprek.
Hans; Eigenlijk Rotterdammer, maar nu een Amerikaan. Of hoe zit het nu eigenlijk Mark?
Mark; Dat zit zo, dat ik eigenlijk toch wel twee paspoorten heb tegenwoordig.
Hans; Pas een persbericht gehad van je vader. En daar maakte hij jouw nieuw single bekend “This City Tonight” uit. Vertel daar eens over? Zelf geschreven?
Mark; Dit is in samenwerking gegaan met de “Emely Weisband” en dat is ook een Sony artiest welke ook samen heeft gewerkt met o.a. “Luke Bryan” en “Nate Smith” en daarmee mocht ik dan This City Tonight mee opnemen.
Hans; Welke inspiratie zit achter het schrijven van deze song?
Mark; Dit is een song die geïnspireerd is door alle dingen die je in een grote stad tegen komt. Zoals de o.a. de stad Nashville. Eigenlijk de grote verschillen die je tegen komt in een grote stad. Die worden beschreven in dit ‘storytelling song”.
Hans; Komt deze song op een nieuwe album van jou?
Want je vertelde net dat je al heel wat albums hebt uitgebracht!
Mark; Hij staat op een nieuwe cd, die we speciaal voor deze tour hebben uitgebracht.
Die cd is ook alleen maar fysiek verkrijgbaar. Op Spotify komt het nog niet, dat komt omdat er nog een paar singels aan komen. ( inmiddels staat de song wel op Spotify). Vorig jaar hebben we het album “On My Way” uitgebracht. Nu hebben we “On My Way Deluxe edition
“. Daarop staan 20 nummers met extra nieuwe songs en twee live tracks
Eentje van Isala Theater van vorig jaar. Het is een bomvol album wat we nu hebben.
Hans; Als je nu terug kijkt naar een aantal jaren geleden toen je begonnen bent en nu. Hoe kijk je daar tegenaan?
Mark; Ja ik heb enorm mooie dingen meegemaakt. De muzikanten waar je mee mag werken. Billboard en hartje Nashville en een airplane nummer één hit. Dat is als nuchtere Rotterdammer fantastisch om mee te mogen maken.
Hans; Je bent als Rotterdammer naar Nashville verhuist. Had je toen al contacten in Nashville of heb je dat helemaal zelf opgebouwd?
Mark; Ik heb natuurlijk hier in Nederland mijn eerste single opgenomen. Het was eigenlijk een zelf geschreven pop liedje. Dat is toen in Nashville terechte gekomen. Het was toen een nummer één hit op MySpace. Daardoor kreeg ik alle contacten met de studio’s in Nashville. En die vroegen wil je met ons werken en opnemen. En dan merk ook dat je eigenlijk de eerste Nederlander bent die, die stap maakt.
Hans; Ja we hadden het er net al een beetje over. Krijg je wel de kans in het buitenland als buitenlander? Omdat er daar in Nashville al genoeg Amerikanen zitten die ook goed zijn
Mark; Ja maar het word allemaal steeds internationaler. Toen ik daar aan kwam was ik eigenlijk de eerste en kreeg de bij naam “The Dutch Boy”. En als je nu naar Nashville gaat lopen er misschien wel twintig sing and song writers uit Nederland.
Hans; Is dat zo ja
Mark; Ik was een avond bij de “blue bird”, vorig jaar was dat ergens. Van de achttien songwriters waren er wel vier of vijf Nederlanders.
Hans; Met wie heb je daar in Amerika zoal opgetreden Mark; Oh, we doen daar van alles. Het is moeilijk om zo allemaal even te herinneren. We spelen op festivals o.a. met Travis Tritt.
Hans; Van Amerika terug naar de Western Experience. Hoe kom je hier nu terug.
Mark; Dat is een hele goede vraag. Dat is zo gekomen. Ze hebben al een aantal jaren dat ze mij volgen. Heb dat eerst een beetje van me afgehouden, omdat ik dacht dat een associatie had met een LineDance festival. En dat is niet zoiets waar mijn muziek voor is gemaakt. Maar ze wilde me graag omdat ze vertelde dat ze graag de New Country wilde promoten. En we gaan verjongen met ons festival. Toen vertelde ik hun, als dat is wat jullie willen. Dan wil ik daar zeker naar luisteren. We hebben erover gesproken hoe we dat gaan doen. Vorig jaar ben ik voor het eerst hier geweest. Dit jaar weer op Bob`s Tage, maar ook in The Nashville Bar.
Hans; Welke songs ga je dan brengen in de Nashville Bar?
Mark; New Country Music, in combinatie met enkele classics. Het word een mix met van alles wat.
Hans; Wat zijn je toekomst plannen Mark?
Mark; Mijn toekomstplannen zijn gewoon, lekker mee doorgaan waar we mee bezig zijn. Ik zeg altijd maar je weet nooit niet welken kansen er nog op je af komen.
Hans; Dus je hebt niet echt een bucket list?
Mark; Nee, wat ik zeg. Ik probeer gewoon lekker door te gaan. Ik kan nu van muziek leven. En dat is waar ik altijd van gedroomd heb. Wat ik nu doen, had ik in Nederland niet kunnen doen. Ik doe daar leuke dingen. Ik kom mooie nieuwe steden tegen. En ik ga gewoon lekker met de band op stap.
Hans; Heb je een vast band in Nashville?
Mark; In Nashville heb ik een vaste band. Het zijn muzikanten die Nashville ervaring hebben. Maar uit Michigan komen! Waarom doe ik dat? Dat doe ik, omdat heel veel muzikanten die in Nashville wonen heel wispelturig zijn. Als hun iets voorbij komt, dan stappen ze op de volgende trein. Ik heb liever dat ik ze bij elkaar kan houden. Want anders moet je steeds weer andere zoeken.
Hans; Ja heel Amerikaans, als ze ergens een dollar meer kunnen verdienen dan gaan ze!
Mark; Ja dat bedoel ik

We're at the Western Experience and we run into Mark Blomsteel. Raised in Rotterdam, Mark left his roots to further develop his passion for music in the country music mecca of Nashville. At eighteen, he wrote his first song, “Leaving it all behind”, which became a hit on MySpace. This hit led to Mark receiving a call from Nashville, asking if he'd like to come to their studio. Today, we're talking with him.
Hans; Originally from Rotterdam, but now an American. Or how is it, Mark?
Mark; The thing is, I actually have two passports these days.
Hans; I recently received a press release from your father. He announced the release of your new single, "This City Tonight." Tell me about it. Did you write it yourself?
Mark: It was a collaboration with Emily Weisband, another Sony artist who has also worked with Luke Bryan and Nate Smith, among others. I was allowed to record "This City Tonight" with them.
Hans: What was the inspiration behind writing this song?
Mark: This song is inspired by all the things you encounter in a big city, like Nashville, for example. Actually, the big differences you encounter in a big city. These are described in this "storytelling song."
Hans; Will this song be on a new album of yours?
Because you just mentioned that you've already released quite a few albums!
Mark; It's on a new CD that we released especially for this tour.
That CD is also only available physically. It's not on Spotify yet, because there are still a few singles coming. (The song is now on Spotify.) Spotify). Last year we released the album “On My Way” . Now we have the "On My Way Deluxe Edition."
It features 20 songs, plus new ones and two live tracks. One from Isala Theater last year. It's a jam-packed album.
Hans; Looking back a few years ago, when you started, and now, how do you feel about that?
Mark; Yes, I've experienced some truly wonderful things. The musicians I get to work with. Billboard, the heart of Nashville, and an Airplane number one hit. As a down-to-earth Rotterdammer, that's fantastic to be a part of.
Hans; You moved to Nashville from Rotterdam. Did you already have contacts in Nashville, or did you build them entirely on your own?
Mark; Of course, I recorded my first single here in the Netherlands. It was actually a self-written pop song. It ended up in Nashville. It was a number one hit on MySpace at the time. That's how I got in touch with all the studios in Nashville. And they asked, "Would you like to work with us and record with us?" And then I realized I was actually the first Dutch person to take that step.
Hans; Yes, we were just talking about it a little bit. Do you even get the chance to work abroad as a foreigner? Because there are already plenty of Americans in Nashville who are also good.
Mark; Yes, but it's all becoming more and more international. When I arrived there, I was actually the first and got the nickname "The Dutch Boy." And if you go to Nashville now, there might be twenty singers and songwriters from the Netherlands.
Hans; Is that so?
Mark; I was at the "Blue Bird" one night, sometime last year. Of the eighteen songwriters, four or five were Dutch.
Hans; Who did you perform with in America?
Mark; Oh, we do all sorts of things there. It's hard to remember everything. We play festivals with Travis Tritt, among others.
Hans; From America back to the Western Experience. How do you get back here now?
Mark; That's a really good question. That's how it came about. They've been following me for a few years now. I initially held it back a bit because I thought it had an association with a line dance festival. And that's not what my music is made for. But they wanted me because she said she wanted to promote the New Country. And we're going to rejuvenate with our festival. Then I told them, if that's what you want, then I'd definitely listen to it. We talked about how we were going to do that. Last year I was here for the first time. This year again at Bob's Tage, and also at The Nashville Bar.
Hans; What songs will you be performing at the Nashville Bar?
Mark; New Country Music, combined with some classics. It'll be a mix of everything.
Hans; What are your future plans, Mark?
Mark; My future plans are simply to keep doing what we're doing. As I always say, you never know what opportunities will come your way.
Hans; So you don't really have a bucket list?
Mark; No, what I'm saying. I'm just trying to keep going. I can make a living from music now. And that's what I've always dreamed of. What I'm doing now, I couldn't have done in the Netherlands. I'm doing fun things there. I'm discovering beautiful new cities. And I'm just going out with the band.
Hans; Do you have a regular band in Nashville?
Mark; In Nashville, I have a steady band. They're musicians with Nashville experience. But they're from Michigan! Why do I do that? Because a lot of musicians who live in Nashville are very fickle. If something comes along, they hop on the next train. I'd rather keep them together. Otherwise, you'd always have to find new ones.
Hans; Yes, very American, if they can earn a dollar more somewhere, they will go!
Mark; Yes that is what I mean
